Visual Arts 10 (Lesson 1.7)

This is a drawing of Jesus Christ wearing a crown of thorns. I used graphite pencils (2B, 4B, and 6B) for the portrait. Then, I taped on a cutout of the crown using scrapbook paper with an autumn-leaves design.

In regards to the meaning of this drawing, I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Every year, my family and I would celebrate Easter (Resurrection Sunday), which will happen in a few weeks from now. It honours Jesus’ Resurrection after he sacrificed himself to save us from eternal death.

Artist Inspirations: Pablo Picasso
Look closely at Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica. What symbols did Picasso use and how do they impact the viewer? Why do you think Picasso used a monochromatic colour scheme? Research the principles of design and identify which ones Picasso used in this painting.

In the painting “Guernica”, Picasso used various symbols such as the bull and horse, which represent brutality and suffering. These symbols impact the viewer by provoking empathy and bringing awareness to the horrors of war. I think Picasso used a monochromatic colour scheme to emphasize the raw emotion and stark reality, similar to black and white photography. As for the principles of design, he used rhythm, contrast, unity, balance, and emphasis. In conclusion, Picasso created his painting “Guernica” to challenge the idea of war.

Stop and Think:
How can you create artwork that will make a statement about what is important or of concern to you?

I can create artwork that will make a statement by focusing more on the underlying ideas rather than the physical aspects. I think that will encourage the viewer to engage with the deeper meanings. I can also use symbolism or metaphors that would align with my message. Every line, shape, and composition should serve my purpose. In conclusion, I can create meaningful art by letting my creativity communicate what is important or of concern to me.
