Visual Arts 10 (Lesson 1.11)

I used charcoal pencils (hard, medium, and soft compressed) for this drawing. For the blending, I used tissue paper that was wrapped around my finger. I also used a kneaded eraser to add highlights on the banana. This was all done on drawing paper designed for pencil, charcoal, pastel, and pen.

Artist Inspirations: Heather Hansen
Conduct an inquiry into Heather Hansen’s kinetic art. Watch the YouTube video to see her at work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV_DSyaJCMg Name the elements of art Heather Hansen uses in her artwork.

The following list explains the elements of art that Heather Hansen uses in her artwork:

– Lines: The strokes are drawn with the movement of her body. They can be straight or curvy, depending on how she moves.

– Shapes: When she repeats her movements, patterns emerge. These patterns can form symmetrical or natural designs.

– Form: By layering her movements, she builds up a sense of depth and volume.

– Movement: This is an important part in her artwork as it captures each stroke and motion on the paper.

– Texture: The rough and smooth textures are caused by the variations in pressure and line thickness as Hansen applies the charcoal onto the paper.

– Space: The empty areas between her lines and shapes are also important. They allow the eyes to take a break and make the artwork look more interesting.

In conclusion, Heather Hansen’s artwork beautifully combines dance, drawing, and self-expression, using the elements of art in a mesmerizing way.

Stop and Think:
What is visual literacy and why is it important? How do visual images influence us? Why is it important for everyone to learn to read, interpret, and evaluate visual images (e.g., advertising photos, graphic novels, political iconography, and social media images)?

Visual literacy refers to the ability to understand, interpret, and create images and visual media. It is important because it allows us to read pictures, graphics, and other visual information. Visual images are everywhere, such as in advertisements, social media, or political iconography, influencing what we see or think. Learning visual literacy helps us to understand and communicate these ideas visually in a clear and effective way. In conclusion, visual literacy plays an important role in our daily lives.
