These are blind contour drawings of my right hand. The one in the top-left corner was the first drawing that I did. I thought it was difficult at first, but as I kept on practicing, I became more confident and better at it.

Artist Inspirations: Daphne Odjig
Look closely at Odjig’s painting “To Drop the Mask”. Where did your eye go as you were looking at the painting? Where did you end up? Can you find the outline of a mask? Why do you think she used the symbol of a mask? What elements of art did Odjig use in her painting?
“To Drop the Mask” is a painting done by Daphne Odjig. In the middle of the painting, it shows abstract faces that attracted most of my attention. The mask (the white shape at the bottom) can be seen by looking at the outline of the main subject. I think the outline looks like the side profile of a woman’s head. I also think Odjig used the symbol of a mask to represent defiance by resisting barriers and freely expressing one’s thoughts. In conclusion, the elements of art that Odjig used in this painting were calligraphic lines and beautiful colours to lead the viewer’s eye. This painting gets 4 out of 5 stars from me.
Stop and Think:
Why are women and Indigenous artists underrepresented in art history books?
Women and Indigenous artists are represented in many art history books. However, some books include very little to none of women artists, especially those from Indigenous communities. The reason may be because the door is not open enough for all people to join in the art community. In other words, not everyone is encouraged or open to represent all people of gender, race, and so on. In conclusion, women and Indigenous artists are underrepresented in art history books because others choose to let that happen.
