Visual Arts 10 (Lesson 1.3)

I used photos as reference for each of the negative space drawings. Pencil and eraser were used for the initial sketch, and then a brush pen was used to fill in the negative spaces. Overall, this was a new but simple way of drawing for me.

Artist Inspirations: M.C. Escher
How can art be mathematical? M.C. Escher drew inspiration from mathematical ideas he read about. He focused on using geometry to create impossible spaces. Use the internet to search for images of his mind-bending visual illusions.

There are many ways art can be mathematical. In the case of M.C. Escher, he used tessellations, which are geometric grids to form intricate interlocking designs. This would involve the use of mathematical principles, such as geometry. Another example is perspective drawing, which involves making grids and understanding angles. Overall, there are many ways math can be involved in art. (Source: Lesson 1.3, Page 1, Paragraph 2)

Stop and Think:
The work of many master artists was not considered art by the critics of their day. Who decides what art is and if it’s valuable?

There is debate on who decides what art is and if it is valuable. Art and its value are decided by the artist. Critics can have their opinions about someone else’s work, but it is the artist who truly decides whether their work is art or not. Some people may not agree with them, but it is the artist’s decision because they created the work. In conclusion, the artist decides what art is and if it is valuable.
